چکیده

Metabolism of carbon tetrachloride is essential for its toxic effect on intracellular components of the hepatocytes (Butler, 1961 ; Recknagel, 1967). Carbon tetrachloride decreases the biliary excretion of foreign organic compounds of high molecular weight (Barakat & Abou-El-Markarem, 1973). Whether metabolism of carbon tetrachloride is also essential for this effect, will be discussed here. Various doses of carbon tetrachloride (50-150Omg/kg body wt. dissolved in 2.5ml of olive oil) were administered orally or intraperitoneally to female Wistar albino rats. Serum bilirubin concentration did not increase after a single oral dose of carbon tetrachloride. The rats developed jaundice (serum bilirubin <3 mg/10Oml) after the third oral dose. Serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (EC 2.6.1.2) and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (EC 2.6.1 .l) reached a maximum at doses of250mgofcarbontetrachloride/ kg body wt. Increasing the dose of carbon tetrachloride, repeated administration or

A STUDY OF FREE RADICAL INJURY TO VITAL ORGANS

The study of toxicities which are caused by free radical inducing chemicals (e.g., carbon tetrachloride), helps to determine the mode of action of those important drugs which act by inhibiting free radicals. Evaluation of toxicities induced by carbon tetrachloride and phenobarbitone administration was carried out in seventy healthy male rabbits. Each animal received CCI4 0.25-0.5 mL/kg bod...

Toxicity of Carbon Tetrachloride in Japanese Quails: Evaluation the Effect of Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) Powder on Performance and Immune Response

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of artichoke powder on performance and immune function of Japanese quails poisoned with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). One hundred meat type (1-d-old) quails were assigned randomly to 4 treatment groups (n=25). Treatment groups included with the study were: 1) control group (without artichoke supplementation or CCl4 administration, 2) group with...

Hepatoprotective Effect of Otostegia persica Boiss. Shoot Extract on Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Acute Liver Damage in Rats

In this study, the hepatoprotective effect of the methanol extract of aerial parts (shoot) from Otostegia persica Boiss (Golder) was investigated against the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute hepatotoxicity in male rats. Liver damage was induced through the oral administration of 50% CCl4 in liquid paraffin (2.5 mL/Kg bw, per os) 60 min after the administration of the methanol extract o...

Effect of OATP-binding on the prediction of biliary excretion.

1. Biliary excretion of compounds is dependant on several transporter proteins for the active uptake of compounds from the blood into the hepatocytes. Organic anion-transporting polypeptides (OATPs) are some of the most abundant transporter proteins in the sinusoidal membrane and have been shown to have substrate specificity similar to the structural characteristics of cholephilic compounds. 2....
